The Purtimiro Festival in its third year has already become one of the most authoritative events on the Italian Baroque music scene.
Conceived to offer the same repertoire represented, with extraordinary success since the early eighteenth century, in one of the most ancient musical and operatic seasons of the Emilia-Romagna, today it is reproposed in the unique setting of Rossini, theater opened in 1761 and titled in 1859 composer, who spent his teens in Lugo performing his first musical studies.
In this edition, Lugo becomes the ideal destination for those who want to appreciate the "Italian school" of interpretation of the baroque singing and instrumental repertoire. A rare and highly suggestive repertoire, selected following the fil-rouge of the melody and the typically Italian cantabile. The selection of interpreters bears the sign of the executive accuracy and of the musical taste appreciated by the public and critics.
The value of the concerts is accompanied by the harmony of a land like Romagna that, in addition to music, offers the quality of its hospitality and its good life.

WHAT TO KNOW
The ancient Romagna region, with its strong and hospitable characteristics, has three sides: the sea, with its light and crowded coasts; the hills, which rise into the Apennines along the border with Tuscany and Marche; and the plains, possibly the most unexpected aspect in the eyes of an observant visitor.
Lugo is one of the capitals of the Romagna plain, a city that demonstrates the prosperity and life of this region with its architectural lines and monuments. Bologna and Ravenna, international cities of art and culture, are only a few dozen kilometers away; however, in Lugo, because of its structures and ties to the D’Este family of Ferrara, you can nonetheless sense the distant echo of the great plain that extends towards the Po. Here, the fortress, the noble palaces, the churches, the 18th-century theatre, the institutions along with the many cultural activities and long-standing markets tell the story of a community that has over the centuries established a high quality of life. The musical tradition lives in the soul of the city, which is tied to many of the great names of Italian music. Arcangelo Corelli, without a doubt one of the greatest Italian and European Baroque composers, was born not far away in Fusignano. Gioachino Rossini first studied here before rising to global fame. And here you will find one of the most valuable, elegant and oldest theatres in Emilia Romagna, used for top-ranking musical performances.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The Rocca Estense, the huge noble monument of the city, dates back to 1500 with a section linked to the figure of Uguccione della Faggiola going back even further to the beginning of 1200. In what is still today the town hall, the hanging garden is an unusual and picturesque space within the Rocca. To any visitor, the Pavaglione seems to depict itself as the heart of the city. At first, you might ask yourself, in vain, if it is a single square surrounded by a portico or a great portico with a square inside. It’s difficult to decide. This single urban structure, completed in 1783, was built as a trading area for silkworms and other products from the countryside. Today, it sees not only the passing of goods from the weekly market with six centuries of history but also the exchange of thoughts and ideas stirred by the many cultural events and shows that take place within its walls. Many believe Lugo’s Pavaglione is one of the more characteristic “architectural symbols” of Romagna. However, Lugo is not only known for its special relationship with the Romagna region and its prosperous agriculture, but also for the otherwise unique relationship it has with the air. Francesco Baracca was born here. He was a legendary Italian pilot known especially for his audacious flights during World War II. A museum dedicated to him houses a wealth of mementos and even two period planes on which you can see his personal emblem of the “prancing horse” that Enzo Ferrari would eventually adopt for his four-wheeled beauties built in Maranello and famous the world over. There is also a monument near the Rocca dedicated to the aeronautic master. Another place full of details that attest to the civil and cultural wealth of Lugo is the Rossini Theatre. It’s surprising to find such an architectural gem in a city of this size and especially in an area – Emilia Romagna – where almost every town has its own little, grand historical stage. Antonio Galli da Bibiena, one of the greatest 18th-century theatre architects, worked on its final stages (1761). The name for Rossini, dating to 1859, was motivated by the fact that Lugo was his father’s birthplace and because in 1802 the young Gioachino lived there after moving with his family from his hometown of Pesaro. Rossini studied his first notes in Lugo with the Malerbi brothers. A tour of the life of Rossini then continues to the Rossini family home, where many documents and testimonies about Gioachino are located; then Villa Malerbi, where he studied; and the Church of Carmine, where he went to practice on the exquisite Callido and Gatti organs. Many churches in Lugo have preserved important artwork, including the church of Suffragio with its Baroque interior, the church of Collegiata with its 15th-century cloister, and the church of San Francesco with a fine collection of 15th-century terracotta figures of the dead Christ. L’oratorio di Sant’Onofrio has preserved work by Ignazio Stern and the Croce Coperta, an important series of frescoes from the Ferrara school dating to 1400 and 1500. Not far from the city is the Chiesa di Campanile, which holds a Byzantine tower from Ravenna dating to the 9th century, and the 16th-century Chiesa dell’Ascensione. Finally, in the Parco del Loto, where you can see the old canale dei mulini (mill call), you can take a lovely walk through nature and history.
